Augmented Reality: Re-imaging Physical Space

Fine Arts usage of augmented reality/ interactive print/augmented sculpture. Using augmented reality apps, or midrange 3D, or advanced programming methodologies we will experiment with ways we can use AR for expression in public spaces.

Using a multi-tiered approach  based on your technical interest and ability:
More below under “tools and techniques” after this inspiration….

We will experiment with the idea of restructuring the everyday in ways to creatively see and perceive new perceptual opportunities and awareness in everyday surroundings, not so much created by the AR experience, but rather revealed by it.

Is there a real difference between a flower in these states
Real, Artificial, Virtual rose,
A dream, a fantasy, a memory of a flower?

An occurrence long ago at a specific place, and that same place right now?

Can we possibly bridge time and space?

Augmented Reality (AR)

"If the human [soul] is anything, it must be of unimaginable complexity and diversity … . I can only gaze with wonder and awe at the depth and heights of our psychic nature. Its non-spatial universe conceals an untold abundance of images which have accumulated over millions of years of living development and become fixed in the organism. My consciousness is like an eye that penetrates to the most distant spaces, yet it is the psychic non-ego that fills them with nonspatial images. And these images are not pale shadows, but tremendously powerful psychic factors… Beside this picture I would like to place the spectacle of the starry heavens at night, for the only equivalent of the universe within is the universe without; and just as I reach this world through the medium of the body, so I reach that world through the medium of the psyche."

                - C. G Jung  (Freud and Psychoanalysis, CW 4, p. 331)

Level 8: Split Scan

Slit scan photography and video:

Slit-scan photography is the process of capturing moving subjects with a thin capture slit that moves across the frame over time. This process can also be applied to video with the use of programs like Processing.

Rosalie Yu, Embrace In Progress

http://www.sothebys.com/content/dam/sothebys-pages/blogs/Slideshow/2017/June/rosalieyu.jpgRosalie Yu is a Taiwanese artist whose slit-scan sculptures explore conflicted feelings of shared intimacy and are reflections on her own personal relationship to the body mediated by technology. Yu uses depth sensors and photogrammetry to capture a series of intimate embraces with strangers that are then 3-D printed into sculptures that represent the length of each encounter. The resulting compositions reference traditional sculptures such as Rodin’s The Kiss, yet appear deformed and distorted by the very technology used to create them.

A viewer experiencing Sarah Rothberg’s virtual reality work Memory/Place: My House, 2014–15.

http://www.sothebys.com/content/dam/sothebys-pages/blogs/Slideshow/2017/June/sarah3.jpgWith Memory/Place: My House, Sarah Rothberg presents us with an entryway to her own childhood via virtual reality environments composed entirely from her own old VHS tapes. Viewers are invited to journey into Rothberg’s childhood home in virtual reality and spend time in the middle of an environment which is entirely composed of her memories. Created in 2014 in the immediate wake of Facebook’s purchase of Oculus, Rothberg’s work speculates on the emotional impact that future technology will have on personal memories.

Collective problem solving in Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) as part of distributed campaigns. Possible collective games based on puzzles no individual could solve alone, often use mobile technologies and are solved by teams working together online. Each ARG develops an online community dedicated to solving the puzzles put forth. Storytelling, implementing an analytic system to analyze and simulate the process by which distributed individuals contribute to and shape a collective story.

What is a PARK?

A park is an area of open space provided for recreational use. It can be in its natural or semi-natural state, or planted, and is set aside for human enjoyment or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. It may consist of rocks, soil, water, flora and fauna and grass areas, but may also contain buildings and other artifacts such as play grounds. Many natural parks are protected by law.
