How to take the course:

Show up. Attendance is mandatory every week. Do the work. Do the readings and come prepared to ask questions. Turn work in on time. Contribute to the discussions.

 

Goals- developing creative ability and depth of expression using digital imaging tools. The study of the interplay between the observed, the observer, and the process of observation. Application of technical/aesthetic knowledge in the completion of a series of visual art projects, culminating in a creative student directed final project. (The mid-term review resonates ideas and acts as a trajectory towards the final project.)

 

Assumed Knowledge and Skills- Awareness of digital imaging concepts, skills, and topics in electronic arts from media arts studio classes (ARTS-1020).

 

Topics Covered - The following formal topics (point, line, gesture, light, scale, color, composition, form, simulation, and art delivery systems) are studied in relation to the creation of a series of short studies exploring perception, identity, memory, time, movement in still space, the immobilization of the gaze, context and meaning, montage and veracity, iconographic and textual juxtaposition, and digital landscape. Techniques and solutions for giving visual form to ideas. The implications of the shift from chemical to digital systems of image production and beyond to emergent mutable imagescapes.

 

Technical Skills Covered- raster and vector based imaging, color studies, digital photo retouching, montage, some web, advanced knowledge and experience with input and output techniques including digital cameras, scanners and large format digital printing.

 

Requirements and Evaluation: Students must demonstrate satisfactory achievement of course objectives through fulfillment of course projects and by contributing to class discussions and critiques.

Grading:                     

• 35% Short studies (5.8% each x 6)

• 50% Final Project with artist statement

• 10% Participation in class & printed outlines of class readings when due

• 05% Journals

Required materials:

* An active RCS account.

* approximately 7 CDs

* A camera

* Other materials on a project basis

* Journal – keep a working journal of you ideas, drawings, photographs, dream records, etc. which will act a source for your creative process. You should carry this with you at all times to record your creative insights. Bring them to class as well. (due April 29)

 

Fabrication costs/materials:

You will be making a number of digital prints/manifestations of your work on and off campus. The costs of digital printing vary, but be prepared to incur approximately $50 in fabrication/material costs.
