CLASS DROP BOX AND PICKUP BOX INFO

If you are a first time user of the HSS-WIN domain, you have to go to

http://helpdesk.hss.rpi.edu/ to activate your account.

You will find a link on the left side of that page for changing passwords.

For username type your rcs id (your rpi email address minus @rpi.edu)

For old password type your RIN (you can find this on your student id, and it usually starts

with 660).

For new password, I recommend using your rcs (rpi email) password.

Until you have done this your account is not active and thus unusable).

Once you have done this, you are ready to start using our system. Keep in mind that your

actual account id is HSS-WIN\yourrcsid, not just your rcs id. Depending on what courses you are taking, this account will give you access to drop

boxes for classes, software, printing, and private storage space. If you are an

undergraduate, the private storage space is only useable for the duration of the semester.

The contents will be deleted 3 days after the last day of that semester’s exams. Be sure to

back up to cd or thumbdrive whatever you wish to keep before it gets deleted.

Now then, how do you get to all of this?

First and foremost, almost all of our resources are behind the campus firewall. This

means you will need to use the campus vpn client to connect. Once you start up vpn,

To connect to our resources from a pc:

Click start, settings, control panel (vista is slightly different, but just get yourself to the

control panel).

Next find the user accounts icon, and double click it to open it.

Select your user account, and go to advanced.

Click on manage passwords, and click add.

For server type *.hss-win.rpi.edu

For username type HSS-WIN\yourrcsid

Of course substituting your own rsc id for the yourrcsid part.

For password type your rcs password correctly it will not ask you to confirm it.

Once this is done, click ok, close, and ok again. You can now access the drop boxes

By clicking start, run, and typing \\human101.hss-win.rpi.edu\classes

To connect to our resources from a mac:

Go to the finder, click Go, in the top menu bar, then click on connect to server.

For server, type smb://human101.hss-win.rpi.edu/classes

Click on the plus if you want to get back to it easily later, then click connect.

A window will pop up. Leave the workgroup /domain name as is. Change your username

to your rcs id (whatever is to the left of @rpi.edu in your email address) and tye your hsswin

password. Click connect.

You will see a bunch of folders, mostly with crn class names.

1.      Go to your class folder, ARTS 2040

2.      Go to the drop box folder.

3.      Then open the folder for your section

4.       Next open the folder that has your user name or your full name (this depends on what section you are in, but you should be able to figure this out….

5.      Then drag your homework to the folder that has the name of the assignment.

It will disapear.

Congratulations! You have now handed in your assignment!

If later on, you hand in a revision, make sure you give it a slightly different name (example :

Besthomeworkassignmentever.jpg and Besthomeworkassignmenteverversion2.jpg)

Be careful not to use non pc friendly characters in your file names if you work on a mac!!!  Otherwise, your instructor may no tbe able to open the document, and your senior systems administrator (me) will be frothing at the mouth, because it takes extra work on my side!

Examples of characters you should no tuse in naming files are:

Asterisk           *

Colon :

Back slash      \

Forward slash /

Less Than        <

Greater Than   >

Pipe     |

Quote

Question mark            ?

all non-printable characters

If there is a pickup box, your instructor may or may not use it to put stuff in such as hand outs. There are other parts to our system as well. See our helpdesk page.

http://helpdesk.hss.rpi.edu/ is usually a good reference point to start at. We try

to keep it up to date as much as possible, so it is fair to say that when we have time to

update any bit of information about our system, it will make its first public appearance on

that site.
