Magic: A Whiteboard Drawing Stop-Action Animation
Home

My final project is a more in-depth look at stop-action animation from the drawing point of view. Instead of using an actual object or using Flash to animate an image, I want animate drawings that I create on a white board, simulating a flip book. Each drawing has something in it that transitions the image to the next drawing, an inspiration I got from watching a Youtube video of a 4 minute whiteboard animation. The final video will be a group of objects that morph into other images until the movie returns to the first image. I decided to do whiteboard drawings instead of a more traditional type of drawing like charcoal or pencil sketching because my whiteboard is a very important part of my thinking process. Whenever I'm stuck on a project or just feel like doodling, my whiteboard helps me visualize my ideas.

The first step of my project was to make a storyboard for each scene. I broke each scene into sections; for some scenes I made bigger sketches if the image had specific details and stated colors that would be used for each scene. The next step was to photograph each scene. I taped my whiteboard to a stable surface and marked the place were I sat in case I needed to get up. Then I proceeded to draw the different images. I didn't necessarily draw everything in order; for some scenes I knew that I would need the same image for something that happened later, so I drew it first. Along with this, the whiteboard sometimes had multiple scenes on it at once. After taking all of the images I put them into Windows Movie Maker to edit/evaluate the images. After looking some scenes I decided to re-draw them. Finally I added sound. The music for the piece is supposed to represent the sense of fun and quirkiness that is seen in the film. I chose to use Imogen Heap's music because her lyrics are very funky and the sound is a unique type of the electronic genre.
