Temple Illusion

Look carefully at this temple.  Does something look strange?  How can the arm be both in front of the columns and behind the roof at the same time?

This optical illusion is an effect of perspective. The temple isn't what it looks like.  The columns are not vertical. Instead, they are tilted away from you. From this point of view the columns seem to match up and connect with the pediment.

The illusion is difficult to see because you are only given a 2-D view of the temple. Like a camera, this view flattens the perspective and does not have any depth.  Depth perception would give the true shape of the temple.
