Short Study 3 -

The Restoration of Memory: Your Personal Visual History (Due week 5, Feb 16)

Part one: expert photo-retouching of an old family photograph.

Part two: photomontage a new family portrait which defies time.

Photo-retouching

Take 1 old personal family photograph in need of restoration. Using advanced color correcting, airbrushing, rubberstamp and other techniques bring the image back to life again. Show both the old and the digitally retouched version side by side. What is gained and lost by this alteration?

Photomontage & Truth - defying time and space create a new family portrait

Photomontage is defined as the technique of making a photographic composition by combining parts or elements of more than one photograph, often with the addition of other graphic material. Also a composition made by using such techniques.

Using techniques of photomontage and image manipulation learned in studio, take 3 family photographs: one of your grand parent, one of your parent, and a new image of yourself all at the same or similar age. Studying the angle, lighting and composition of your ancestors’ images, attempt to replicate this in the image you will take of yourself for the montage. Montage all three images into one family portrait. What new meanings arise?

(If personal family photographs are not available please use close approximations.)
