"When play occurs, it can overflow and overwhelm the more rigid structure in which it is taking place, generating emergent, unpredictable results. Sometimes, in fact, the force of play is so powerful that it can change the structure itself." p. 305
This section on transformative play inspired the concept of the title Activating Play, and the idea that different parts of the game play can emerge as a result of time, play, and interactive experiences.

This game virtually simulates a physical city, which leads to education of the city layout. Our game seems to expand on this concept by forcing the player to experience the physical city to expand the virtual game play.

B.U.G., Big Urban Game, similar to Activating Play, blurs the boundary between real and game worlds. It was first implemented from September 3-7, 2002, in Minneapolis, as a part of a larger design awareness festival called Twin Cities Design Celebration. It involved large inflatable game pieces and demonstrated an interdisciplinary collaborative between architecture and gaming, as physical and imagined (designed) spaces joined. Each player traveled around the city with a large inflatable game piece, stopping at a series of checkpoints. Through his/her travels, he gained an awareness of the city and was meanwhile racing the other players to the final destination.
